It is fun to stroll down memory lane and reminisce about the extravagant and frivolous decade of the 70s. The wild disco parties during the latter part of that period were smashingly outrageous.

The outfits that we sometimes consider costumes today are the product of the hip and cool 70s fashion of the period. Everything was loud and unapologetic. The most ridiculous make-up and party attires were worn by popular rock stars and celebrities, and they were imitated by millions of their loyal fans.

70s disco clothes are spectacular and truly out-of-this-world. Fashion rules were broken and the deviants belonged to the IN crowd. Men and women alike wore outfits that challenged traditional color schemes and conventional fabric combinations. Who said animal prints and ruffles together are way too over-the-top? The 70s didn't just pioneer revolutionary changes in lifestyles. The people of that era were great fashion innovators, too.

You know you are in a 70s costume party when you are surrounded by a sea of people wearing flared pants and matching suits with striking colors. Mini dresses in bright floral prints paired with high cut boots in equally brilliant color is just a taste of the stunning combinations that women of the 70s concocted for their disco attire. Everyone wants attention and they must want it badly because people going for an over the top 70s look today will take the time and effort to put on outrageously big afro wigs and heavy make-up that makes the men's faces beyond recognition. If you think women are incredibly eye-catching, wait ‘til you see the men in their ruffled shirts and animal printed elephant pants.

The color schemes of 1970s fashion display all of the fresh colors of summer except that they can be worn during evening disco parties and still look hip and somehow fabulous. Glam rock and punk rock styles were IN, thanks to the rock stars and movie stars that perpetrated the unusual and glamorous trends. Everybody was loving these outfits during their prime. Added to the hippy outfits left over from the early part of the decade, the mix of styles created an eclectic vibe that refuses to be forgotten.

This is another great video I came across showing all of the grooviest fashions. These are clips from the 1976 Montgomery Ward catalog. I'll be honest, it really brings back some memories and I've got to tell you, this does a really great job of showing what was popular at the time. I mean, it is Montgomery Ward, not some crazy, cutting edge designer!

Vintage Plus Size Clothing

Does vintage plus size clothing exist? Yes. It actually does, but it can be tough to find. One of the biggest problems I found when I started researching this was that every time I looked for anything vintage and added "plus size" to it, I ended up getting inundated with search results for costumes. It seems that retro costumes are pretty popular, but they are not the same thing as actual vintage clothing. In fact, in my experience, most costumes are pretty poor quality unless you pay for top of the line merchandise. You might as well get the real deal.

I did manage to sort things out and hopefully that will make things easier for you. If you ever are able to catch a re-run of Charlie's Angels, you might get the impression that the only 70's clothes available for women in the decade were mumus (I couldn't confirm the spelling on this one), those tent like pseudo shirt/dresses that were one seam short of being a bubble. I couldn't even find a decent photo of one, but do you remember Mrs. Roper from "Three's Company"?

Fear not buxom vintage fans, there really was fashionable clothing available for those of larger proportions! You just have to know how to look for it. I've wasted, er, spent a lot of time searching things out on eBay over the years you know. Here is a little sample of some nice looking 70's clothes that were designed for larger folks. Just a word of warning though, in general, clothes were cut a bit tighter back then. Everything hadn't been supersized yet. I mention this because some people might want to contact sellers for actual measurements that they can compare to clothing they already own. Many buyers will already include this, but if they don't most will be very accommodating if you ask for additional information.
